Choir History

In the early Forties, in Sevierville , Tennessee , the Bible Training School , which was to become Lee College , sponsored "The Church of God Hour" on the local radio stations and featured a 40 voice mixed choir. Directors like Harold Cato, Y.H. Yates, and Roosevelt Miller led this exciting choir.

In the spring of 1958, A.T. Humphries divided the Mixed Choir into two distinct organizations - Touring Choir and Campus Choir. From this inauspicious beginning until the present, Campus Choir has maintained a vital musical witness. Dr. Delton Alford succeeded the founding director and served as director from 1963 to 1967. During his tenure, Campus Choir gave the first performance of Handel's Messiah by a Lee College choir. Dr. Jim Burns directed Campus Choir from 1967 to 1973 and from 1974 to 1978. During his tenure, Campus Choir performed such works as Messiah, Honneger’s King David, and Mendelssohn’s Elijah.

HistoryCampus Choir made their first recording under Dr. Burns, which was Ron Nelson's oratorio, "What is Man?" The choir broadened its repertory by performing some of the contemporary pop musicals such as Love. Jerry Long served as director from 1973 to 1974, and continued the emphasis on classical and service music.

Dr. David Horton became the director in 1978, and served his first tenure until 1980. During this time, Campus Choir continued its emphasis on classical music and service music. They performed Messiah with the Chattanooga Symphony Orchestra, as well as the contemporary pop musical Celebrate Life, with special guest Daniebelle Hall.

Dr. Phillip Thomas served as director from 1980 to 1983. During his tenure the choir performed Vivaldi's Gloria with a full orchestra, as well as a wide variety of musical styles from the then popular disco, to hymn anthems, to classical music.

Dr. David Horton was appointed as director for the second time in 1983. Beginning the first semester with 58 students, the choir began a remarkable growth. The choir grew to an enrollment of 150 students. The decision was made to begin auditions and to limit the size of the choir to around 100 students. At about the same time, the choir began to travel to churches in the surrounding area to sing. Another influence at this time was the creation of Choral Union with the purpose of performing the great oratorios. At this time Dr. David Horton decided to make worship music the focus of the Lee University Campus Choir, and this remains the focus of the choir to this day.

Under the direction of Dr. Horton the choir has had many wonderful opportunities to minister throughout the Eastern United States and in several countries. Campus Choir has performed worship concerts with Phil Driscoll in Sofia , Bulgaria , and with Alvin Slaughter in Kingston , Jamaica . In addition, Campus Choir and Power Unlimited have had the opportunity to sing at some of the leading churches in America . These churches include Times Square Church with Pastor David Wilkerson, Brooklyn Tabernacle, National Church of God, Mt. Paran Church of God, Christ Church in Nashville , North Cleveland Church of God, and Carpenter's Home Church in Lakeland , Florida . Campus Choir also enjoyed a summer tour of Israel in the summer of 1999, and traveled the European countries of Ireland , England , and Wales in the summer of 2002. Though Campus Choir has actually traveled to several foreign countries, its ministry is impacting thousands more due to the choir’s recent involvement with The Inspiration Networks and Trinity Broadcasting Network.

HistoryUnder Dr. Horton, Campus Choir has also recorded a number of audio albums, including Premier Edition, Sing Noel, Let the Church Arise, Gabriel's Song, Revive Us Again (with Alvin Slaughter), Sing Out with One Voice (with Ron Kenoly), Tree of Light, Joy, Jubilee Through The Fire (Power Unlimited), and our newest releases Live In Worship! (The Inspiration Networks) and The Comforter Has Come which premiered Spring 2006. The Comforter Has Come release was the final project that was under the anointed and blessed direction of Dr. David Horton, who was director of Campus Choir for 25 years.

Dr. David Horton passed away in May 2006 while on a summer tour with Campus Choir in Nassau , Bahamas . His teachings and words of wisdom will truly be missed. In addition, Campus Choir and Power Unlimited have performed with such gospel musicians as the Lanny Wolfe Trio, the Talleys, Michael English, Gary McSpadden, Judy Jacobs, Joy Gardner, Alvin Slaughter, Ron Kenoly, and most recently, Geron Davis and Kindred Souls. Video recordings include, Let the Church Arise, Gabriel’s Song, Sing Out with One Voice, Praise, Worship and Glory, Jubilee!, Live In Worship!, and soon to come THE COMFORTER HAS COME. Campus Choir is continuing the musical legacy that began in the forties and also that Dr. David Horton always taught us, to worship in Spirit and in Truth. God is continuing to bless the choir’s ministry to this day and in the future
